Ubuntu with MATE or Xfce
Ubuntu Container hosting on Appbox gives you a managed Ubuntu 24.04 userspace with selectable MATE and Xfce desktop versions. Both use Selkies for browser-based remote desktop access, with SSH and persistent storage included.
What you get with Ubuntu Container hosting
A practical Ubuntu environment with two desktop choices and a web-accessible remote session.
Two desktops
Choose MATE for a classic desktop workflow or Xfce for a lighter remote desktop session.
Selkies access
Both MATE and Xfce are streamed through Selkies so you can open the desktop from the browser.
Ubuntu userspace
Install packages with APT and work in a familiar Ubuntu 24.04 LTS environment.
SSH included
Connect over SSH using the generated host and port shown on the installed app page.
Persistent storage
Your home and configuration data persist across restarts and upgrades.
Sudo available
Use sudo inside the container for package installs and normal system administration tasks.
Choose the desktop that fits the job
The MATE and Xfce versions share the same Ubuntu base, ports, storage model, and Selkies remote desktop access.
MATE version
MATE gives you a traditional desktop layout with panels, menus, and a familiar workstation feel.
Xfce version
Xfce keeps the desktop lighter while still providing a complete graphical Ubuntu session.
Shared Appbox data
Access shared Appbox storage at /APPBOX_DATA for files that need to move between apps.
Same install flow
Select the version you want during install, then use the same SSH and Selkies connection details from the installed app page.
